When you sign up, Unburden stores account information such as your email address and profile.

Your household content

Unburden stores the planning content you create and organizes it by household: meals and recipes (including photos you add to your own recipes), pantry and grocery lists, leftovers, tasks and routines, reminders, travel, hosting, people and birthdays, notes, and preferences. It is stored with your account so it can stay in step across your devices. Some of the newest Kitchen and Life content is still being set up on our service and does not sync yet.

Shared expenses and household money planning are planned for Unburden 1.0 and are still being prepared for release; they are not available in the app yet. We will update this policy to describe what they store before they are. Earlier versions offered shared expenses; if your household has such records, they stay with the household. Including them in export and deletion depends on the service update described under Export and deletion.

Households are shared

Unburden is built for shared households. Content in a household is visible to the members of that household, and what you add to a shared household is seen by the people in it. The app is designed to let you invite people, remove members and leave a household; leaving a household and the updated membership checks are still being set up on our service, so not all of this works yet.

Photos and on-device scanning

With your permission, Unburden uses the camera so you can scan labels, receipts and barcodes to fill the pantry. They are read on your device using ML Kit; the camera images are not sent away for analysis.

If you add a photo to one of your recipes, it is stored privately for your household.

For a barcode product lookup, Unburden sends the scanned UPC or EAN code to Open Food Facts. The request does not include your household content, but Open Food Facts receives a standard web request, including your IP address. Results may be cached on your device.

Recipes from the web

If you import a recipe from a web address, that address is used to fetch the page, either by our server or directly from your phone, so the website you link to receives a standard web request. Only the recipe details you save are kept.

Notifications

Reminders you turn on are scheduled on your device. On Android, Unburden does not currently send push notifications from other household members. You can turn notifications off in Profile › Notifications or in your device settings.

Crash and diagnostic data

In store builds, Unburden may use Sentry to capture crashes, error diagnostics, and a sample of performance traces and profiles. Screenshots, view hierarchies and default personal information are turned off. Before a report is sent, the app removes email addresses and the values of fields such as names, notes, titles, amounts and household identifiers. Reports may include a pseudonymous account identifier so repeated errors can be connected without sending your email.

How your data is used

Unburden uses this data to provide your account and keep your household's plan in step, share content within your household, store the recipe photos you add, deliver the reminders you turn on, read scans on your device, look up barcode product information, import recipes you choose, and diagnose crashes to improve reliability.

Sharing

Unburden does not sell your data. It relies on third-party infrastructure: Supabase for authentication, database and private photo storage; Sentry for filtered crash and diagnostic reporting; and Open Food Facts for barcode product lookups. Household content is shared only with members of your household.

Export and deletion

Profile has data export and account deletion. Both depend on a service update that is not complete yet: until it is, export can fail for some households, and deletion in the app may not finish for someone who shares a household and does not yet remove recipe photos. You can ask us to delete your account without the app; see Delete your Unburden account. You can revoke camera and notification permissions in your device settings.

Logs and backups

Our hosting provider keeps service logs for a limited time. We do not currently keep backup copies of Unburden's service data. Before we update the service, we plan to take a private recovery backup, kept with restricted access and used only to restore the service after a failure; if we do, data you delete may remain in that backup until it is removed or replaced.

Security

Unburden uses Supabase access rules to limit household data to the members of that household, and we are adding further checks to them before release. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, but we use reasonable measures to protect your data.

Children

Unburden is not intended for children under 13. If a parent or guardian believes a child has provided personal data, contact us and we will help.

International use

Your data may be processed in countries where Unburden's infrastructure providers operate, which may be outside your own country or region.
