Speech Forward · Privacy

Speech Forward privacy.

Speech Forward is a local-first app. Your practice data, phrases, and settings live on your device. There are no accounts, servers, analytics, ads, or trackers.

Overview

The short version.

Everything you create in Speech Forward stays on your device. The app downloads symbols from ARASAAC, and backups or reports leave only when you choose to export them. Optional Speech Assist prefers on-device recognition; when local recognition is unavailable for a device or language, the installed Apple or Google speech service may process microphone audio under its own terms. Speech Forward never uploads or stores that audio, and we never see, collect, or sell your data.

What is stored on your device

All of the following stays on your device unless you export it yourself: profile and setup choices (name if entered, role, goals, communication level, language, accessibility settings); speech board phrases and custom boards, including any photos you attach; practice history, scores you or a helper tap, session notes, and streaks; caregiver and partner setup such as assigned practice and contact numbers; and any backups you create.

Deleting the app deletes this data from the device. You can export a backup first — backups are files you control.

Microphone and speech recognition (optional)

Speech Forward uses the microphone only if you turn on recording or Speech Assist, and only after your device asks for permission. Practice recordings are kept on the device for immediate playback and are never uploaded — there is no server to upload to.

Speech Assist uses your device's built-in speech recognition. On iOS it requires on-device recognition when the locale supports it; otherwise Apple's speech service may process the audio. On Android it asks the installed recognizer to prefer offline processing, but Google or another installed service may process the audio when local recognition is unavailable. Those services operate under their own terms. Speech Assist only suggests; you always decide the score.

Text to speech

Spoken phrases use the text-to-speech voices installed on your device. No text is sent to Speech Forward.

Network use and ARASAAC symbols

Speech Forward works offline for its core features. It uses the network for one thing: downloading pictogram images from ARASAAC (arasaac.org) when a symbol is not already cached on your device. Like any download, ARASAAC's servers see a standard web request, including your IP address; no personal content, phrases, or practice data is included. Once cached, symbols work offline.

Symbol credits (ARASAAC)

The pictographic symbols used in Speech Forward are the property of the Government of Aragón and were created by Sergio Palao for ARASAAC (arasaac.org). They are distributed under a Creative Commons license (BY-NC-SA).

Sharing and exports

Reports, home-practice sheets, and backups exist so you can share progress with a caregiver or clinician when you choose to. Sharing uses your device's standard share sheet; where a file goes is up to you. Exported files contain personal content, so share them the way you would share any personal document.

Notifications

Practice and backup reminders are scheduled locally on your device. Speech Forward does not use push notification servers.

Crash logs

If an error occurs, Speech Forward may write a crash log that stays in on-device storage only. It is not sent anywhere.

What we do not do

No accounts or sign-in. No analytics, crash-reporting SDKs, tracking, or advertising. No sale or sharing of personal data — we never possess it. No AI training on your data.

Children

Speech Forward is designed for adults recovering speech and language skills and for their caregivers. It is not directed at children under 13.

Health disclaimer

Speech Forward is a practice and communication-support tool. It is not a medical device, does not provide medical advice or diagnosis, and does not replace a speech-language pathologist or other clinician. Scores reflect taps made by you or a helper and are for tracking practice, not clinical assessment.

Changes and contact

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted here with a new date. Because the app has no accounts, we cannot notify you individually; material changes will be noted in the app's release notes. Questions or requests: hello@trailmarkstudios.com.
